Description
Grange House, located at 22 York Road in Edinburgh, dates from around 1820 and is a fine example of an austere classical Italianate two-storey, three-bay house. The front is constructed from high-quality ashlar stone, while the sides are made of coursed rubble. A Doric portico with an entablature creates a balcony above, positioned between the advanced pedimented bays, and there is a base course.
On the principal (west) elevation, a timber panelled door with a lying-pane glazed fanlight is located behind the portico in the central bay, supported by four Roman Doric columns in antis. The Doric entablature with a blocking course forms the balcony for the first floor, which is accessed by a segmental-arched glazed door framed by wrought-iron trellis. The ground floor features arched windows in the outer bays, set within round-headed recessed panels, while the upper floor windows have projecting cills and pediments framed in timber.
The north and south side elevations have blind windows on the first floor. There is a later brick garage with a corniced stone facade on the north side, and French doors are present in a single-storey bay to the right.
The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, and the roof is covered with graded grey slates. The building has raised, coped wallhead stacks with octagonal cans.
The boundary walls consist of a low stone-coped coursed rubble wall, and there are tall ashlar gatepiers topped with corniced and platformed caps.
