Description

Gothic House is a substantial, two-storey, three-bay Tudor Gothic house dating to circa 1820 in Edinburgh. The front facade is faced with smooth pale ashlar, while the sides and rear are of coursed rubble construction.

The west (principal) elevation features a Tudor-arched porch with a crenellated parapet, flanked by square tourelles rising to octagonal, ball-finialled pinnacles. Lancet windows with stained glass are set into the porch returns. The main entrance is through a timber-panelled door, flanked by narrow rectangular windows. A two-light window, set in a moulded surround, is positioned on the first floor, flanked by gabletted and finialled pinnacles linked by a crenellated parapet. Projecting three-light windows are present at ground floor level in the side bays, again flanked by diagonally-set gabletted and finialled pinnacles connected by crenellated parapets. Two-light windows in moulded surrounds are located in the wallhead gables above, and the gables have ornate gabled skews with ball finials on diagonally-set, square section pedestals. Gabletted and finialled square section pinnacles rise from the ground, clasping the outer corners.

The north and south (side) elevations feature windows in moulded surrounds. Some of these windows are blind at the first floor level. They exhibit crow-stepped gables and square section gabletted and finialled pinnacles at the corners. A single-storey, pitched-roofed building with timber Gothic windows is attached to the north. To the southeast, a single-storey, pitched-roofed stone building features stop-chamfered corners and a pointed-arched opening that has been adapted into a garage.

The east (rear) elevation is stepped from left to right. It presents two-light windows with stone mullions on both ground and first floors in the left bay. The centre bay has a small ground floor window and a tall first-floor window with timber Gothic astragals. Single windows are located on both levels in the right bay. A projecting wing to the right has been altered and extended.

The interior includes interesting plasterwork, chimney-pieces, and stained glass.

The house has small-pane lying-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, and is roofed with grey slates. Chimney stacks are coped ashlar, diagonally-set, slender and square in section, with octagonal cans.

The front boundary is marked by an ashlar-coped rubble wall, featuring two sets of octagonal-section gatepiers with conical caps.
