Description
Lomond House, located at 34 York Road in Edinburgh, is a two-storey gabled villa built around 1870. The building features a three-stage Italianate tower and a three-storey canted window on the north side. It is constructed from squared and snecked stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings and has prominent long and short quoins. A projecting dividing course is present at ground floor level, separating the ground and first floors at the rear, and the eaves are bracketed and overhanging.
On the southeast elevation, there are two advanced bays to the left, with the entrance situated in the right gabled bay. Access is gained via steps leading to a timber panelled door that is framed by a moulded stone doorpiece topped with a scroll-framed heraldic device supported by consoles. The left bay features a projecting buttressed stack with a stone panel, while the right bay has a window in a moulded surround that is partially blocked, along with a stone panel above.
The west elevation showcases a three-storey canted bay to the left, which transitions to a square shape at the gablehead. It includes a single window at ground level and a three-light window on the first and second floors. The centre window has an arched head and is complemented by a narrow cantilevered stone balcony with cast-iron railings on the second floor. The central bay contains the three-stage tower, which has single windows on the first and second stages, and arch-headed windows with prominent voussoirs on the third stage. There is a dividing course between the second and third stages, along with corniced eaves and blocks above the corners. The right bay is regularly fenestrated, featuring a gabled window that breaks the eaves at the second floor.
On the north elevation, there is a three-storey canted bay to the right, which also sweeps to a square shape at the gablehead. This bay includes an arched head to the centre window and a narrow cantilevered stone balcony with cast-iron railings at the second floor. The left bay is regularly fenestrated, with a gabled window that breaks the eaves at the second floor.
The east elevation has steps leading to a secondary entrance in the advanced gabled left bay, with a window above. The gabled right bay features a narrow window to the left at the first floor.
The windows throughout the building predominantly feature four-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are ornamental corniced ashlar stacks with some octagonal cans. Additionally, there is a decorative hopper for the downpipe on the south elevation.
The property includes a gateway and boundary walls, featuring an arched gateway that is twinned with that of No. 32, Forthland House, set within a high ashlar-coped random rubble wall.
