18-21 Argyle Place, Edinburgh

18-21 Argyle Place is a four-storey Baronial tenement building dating from around 1875, featuring shops on the ground floor and forming part of a terrace. The structure is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural elements include a cornice above the shops, a corbel table at the third floor that steps down at the center, crow-stepped gables, and chamfered reveals.

The entrance elevation showcases three shopfronts and a tenement doorway, originally arranged with cast-iron columns and foliate capitals. Above the cornice, there is decorative cast-iron brattishing. The outer left and right sections have full-height canted windows, which are corbelled to a square at the gablehead and feature inset paterae, with dividing cornices. The remaining bays contain single windows, while the third-floor windows break the eaves, set within stone finialled round-arched pediments. A central corniced shouldered and moulded wallhead stack with corbel detail flanks the central area, which has a blank square tablet above the second floor.

The windows are 4-pane and plate glass sash and case types. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes lead flashing, rendered mutual stacks, and moulded cans, along with some original rainwater goods and beak skewputts. The interiors were not seen in 1990.
