Description

2 Wester Close in Newhaven, Edinburgh, is a mid to later 18th century building that was recast and converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners around 1970. It is a two-storey, two-bay square-plan vernacular block that is part of a terrace. The ground floor features a three-bay Victorian shop, while there is a single flat above, accessed from the rear (No 2). The exterior is harled and limewashed, with raised concrete surrounds around the openings. There is an exterior stair at the rear leading to the first floor, which has iron railings and resurfaced stair treads.

On the east elevation facing Fishmarket Square, there is a two-leaf timber panelled door at the center with chamfered jambs and a plate glass fanlight above. Flanking this door are single windows on the ground floor, all at a uniform height, and there are single windows in the first-floor bays to the left and right.

The west elevation facing Wester Close has a stair leading to the first-floor entry (No 2) in the central bay, with iron railings and a timber boarded door. There are single windows in the bays to the left and right, along with a single opening for ground floor storage in a projecting forestair and a single window in the left bay.

The rear features an 8-pane timber sash and case window in the outer left bay, while the remaining openings have 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is machine-made red pantiled with a grey slate easing course, and there are precast concrete skews with a standard detail. A coped stack is located to the north with circular cans.
