Description

6 Fishmarket Square and 1 Pier Place is a mid to later 18th century tenement that has been recast and converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners around 1970. This three-storey, four-bay building forms the end of a terrace and features a crow-stepped gable end facing Pier Place. The ground floor houses a public house. The exterior is harled and limewashed, with the ground floor painted. It has a stepped base course, a painted string course, and smooth concrete surrounds to the openings, with slightly raised margins. The building is corbelled out to the second floor, and the second-floor windows are piend-roofed, breaking the eaves.

On the east elevation facing Fishmarket Square, the ground floor entrance is located in the central bay, with single windows in the remaining bays to the left. Above the doorway, there is a small single window, and the first and second floors are regularly fenestrated with two bays to the left and a single bay to the right of the centre.

The north elevation facing Pier Place is three storeys and three bays wide, featuring an additional crow-stepped forestair in the outer right bay. It has a two-leaf timber boarded door with a four-pane fanlight above (No 1). There are single windows on the ground floor in all bays to the left, with regular fenestration on the first and second floors above.

The west elevation, known as Wester Close, displays an asymmetrical arrangement of windows on the first and second floors, with a blind ground floor. All elevations feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has precast concrete skews, beak skewputts, a corniced stack to the south, and a coped stack to the north with circular cans.
