Description

Primrose Cottage is an earlier to mid 19th century L-plan cottage located at 29 Dowie's Mill Lane in Cramond, Edinburgh. The building is a single and two-storey structure with a full-height bowed elevation facing west, situated on sloping ground that backs onto the upper bank of the River Almond. It is constructed from random yellow rubble sandstone with droved ashlar dressings, some of which are painted, and features long and short rubble quoins. There is a single-storey brick lean-to addition at the rear.

The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a timber panelled door located in the re-entrant angle to the right of the north wing. To the left, there is a single window in a bay, and another single window in the bowed wing to the west. The fenestration is irregular, with some windows featuring cement margins, particularly in the two-storey bowed wing at the rear.

On the north side elevation, there is a single window at ground level, centred in the gabled elevation. The brick addition to the left includes a single timber panelled door and a single window in a bay on the outer left, with a projecting cill.

The cottage predominantly features four-pane timber sash and case windows, although there are some modern pivoted windows and various rooflights on the north and south sides. The roof is made of machine-made pantiles, with coped skews and stepped wallhead stacks on the west, east, and north sides, as well as corniced octagonal ashlar chimney cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996. Additionally, there is a square coped random rubble sandstone boundary wall along Dowie's Mill Lane.
