Description

1, 3, 5 Madeira Street is a corner tenement building constructed between 1860 and 1862. It stands three storeys high with an attic and features a shop at the corner. The exterior is made of cleaned cream stugged ashlar sandstone, accented with polished ashlar dressings. Architectural details include a base course, a band course above the ground floor, a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course. The building has a regular arrangement of windows.

On the east elevation facing Madeira Street, there are six bays with a canted angle at the corner. The entrance features a two-leaf panelled storm door at the angle, topped by a pedimented canted dormer. The left bay has a larger shop window at ground level, with a wallhead stack to the right. The next three bays are grouped together, featuring panelled doors and rectangular fanlights for the first two, and a piend-roofed canted dormer in the centre. There is another wallhead stack with a dormer built up behind before reaching the final two bays.

The south elevation facing Ferry Road has four bays, with the two right bays containing shop windows similar to those on the east elevation. The inner left bay has a piend-roofed dormer.

The windows are 4-pane timber sash and case, while the shop windows have three horizontal panes. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are ashlar coped skews and corniced stacks, with the stack on Madeira Street being rendered and one retaining octagonal cans.

The property has a low front wall with saddleback ashlar coping, supporting cast-iron fleur-de-lys railings, which have been replaced at No 5.
