Description

43-47 Ferry Street in Montrose is a three-storey, four-bay tenement built in 1850, forming part of a unified terrace. The building features sandstone ashlar on the front and sides, with squared and snecked stone at the rear. It has a base course, a first-floor cill band course, and an eaves cornice, with double chamfered margins.

On the west elevation, there is a central entrance with a consoled open pediment, a deep-set small-pane rectangular fanlight, and a six-panel door. Flanking the entrance are doorways, with the left one also featuring small-pane fanlights and panelled doors. To the right, there is a large former shop window with plate glass, and a timber-mullioned bipartite window to the left. The first floor has four windows with corniced heads, while the second floor features windows with bracketed cills.

The north elevation adjoins 41 Ferry Street, and the south elevation adjoins 49-71 Ferry Street. The east elevation has a large semicircular stairtower that projects to the centre, reaching full height and breaking the eaves, with a single bay on either side.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with four panes on the front and twelve panes on the rear. It is topped with a grey slate roof that is piended to the north, and there are broad, corniced ashlar stacks on the north and south sides, both dated 1850.
