Description

73-77 Ferry Street in Montrose is a three-storey, four-bay tenement built in 1850, forming part of a cohesive terrace. The building features sandstone ashlar on the front and side, with squared and snecked stone at the rear. It has a base course, a cill band course at the first floor, and an eaves cornice, with double-chamfered margins.

The principal elevation includes a central doorpiece with a consoled open-pediment, a four-pane rectangular fanlight above a six-panel door, and similar doorways on either side with two-leaf doors. There are windows flanking the entrance, with four windows at the first floor featuring corniced heads, while those on the second floor have bracketed cills.

The north elevation adjoins 49-71 Ferry Street, while the south elevation is a three-bay end facing Caledonia Street, featuring two windows at the ground floor, with the centre bay at the first and second floors blocked.

On the east elevation, there are adjoining buildings at 1, 3, and 5 Caledonia Street to the left, with a semi-circular projection in the centre and a single bay to the right. The building has timber sash and case windows with plate glass, and a grey slate roof that slopes to the south. There is a corniced ashlar ridge stack on the north side and a scroll-shouldered corniced ashlar wallhead stack on the south, both dated 1850.
