Description
105, 107, 109, and 111 High Street in Dalkeith is a tenement building from the earlier to mid-19th century. It stands three stories tall with an attic and features five bays. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with the ground floor channelled and painted. The west elevation is harled and has rubble quoins. It includes a base course, a moulded cill course at the first floor, and raised cills at the second floor. The eaves cornice is prominent, along with a deep, leaded blocking course.
On the east elevation facing High Street, there is an enlarged carriage pend with a modern soffit, road sets, and several cast-iron pal stones to the left. The five-bay shop front includes two shops on the right; the left bay features a shop door (No 109) with a plate glass fanlight and a plate glass window in the second bay from the left. The second bay from the right has a two-leaf flush panelled door (No 111) with a two-pane fanlight, flanked by two fixed-pane plate glass shop windows. The first and second floors have regular fenestration.
The west elevation also has five bays arranged in a 1-2-2 pattern. There is a door in the bay to the left of centre and another at the centre, with a pend in the outer right bay. The first and second floors maintain regular fenestration.
The north elevation shows rubble above the adjoining building, No 113 High Street, while the south elevation displays rubble above Nos 101 and 103 High Street, which are listed separately.
The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. There are two piended slate-hung dormer windows on the east and west pitches, canted to the east pitch, with coped skews. The building features a rendered and lined gablehead stack to the south and a half rendered brick stack to the north, all covered with grey slates.
