Description
31 Bellfield Street is an early 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay house located at the end of a terrace. It has a rectangular plan with an extension at the rear. The building features finely droved ashlar stonework, while the blank side elevation is harled. It includes a base course, a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course.
The northwest (principal) elevation has a regular arrangement of bays, with windows on each floor in the central and left bays. To the right, there is a stylised fielded panel door set in a semicircular recess, featuring fluted ingoes and a broad semicircular radial fanlight that spans the door and flanking pilasters, which are also recessed. Above the door, there is a window at the first floor.
The southeast (rear) elevation includes a projection that predates 1856 at the right bay.
The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate roof with a platform at the apex, which is lit by a cupola. The roof features coped skews and apex stacks.
Inside, the property boasts exceptionally high-quality decorative plasterwork throughout, including gothic fan-vaulting in the entrance hall, bosses and ribs in the cupola, cornices, roses, and overdoors in the principal rooms. The drawing room features a white marble chimneypiece with carved floral details and incised anthemions, along with original grate fittings. The dining room has a black marble chimneypiece.
The boundary walls are made of droved ashlar with coping.
