Description

43 Bellfield Street in Edinburgh is a terrace of five houses built around 1900, with some later alterations. The two-storey structure features a forward position relative to its neighbor, possibly indicating plans for further development to the northeast, or it may have been intended for demolition. The exterior is made of stugged and coursed sandstone, with droved ashlar canted windows and ashlar dressings. The side elevation facing No. 47 is now rendered. Architectural details include a base course, a broad moulded band course that oversteps the downpipes, and an eaves course, with chamfered arrises around the windows.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, each house has doorpieces topped with a broken swan-neck pediment, located in the left bay. The lintels feature fluted panels, and the moulded chamfering stops midway on the arrises. Each house has two-leaf doors, with No. 39 currently fitted with a modern two-leaf door, and above each door is a rectangular fanlight made of plate glass. To the right of each house are full-height canted window bays, supported by timber brackets on stone corbels, with timber lintels above the first-floor windows. The gableheads are adorned with pierced barge boards.

The southeast (rear) elevation has projections on the outer left of each house. The windows are 4-pane timber sash and case style. The roofs are covered with grey slate and feature a platform at the apex, along with glass skylights, and there are chimney stacks on the front skew pitch.

The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1994. The boundary walls are made of rubble with coping and were formerly topped with cast-iron railings.
