Description
The War Memorial on Baird Road in Ratho, built around 1920, is a Celtic revival structure. It features a Celtic cross set on a pedestal base within a square margined area, which originally had enclosing railings that were likely removed during World War II. The memorial showcases a mix of Pictish and Celtic interlaced motifs, along with plastic mouldings. The cross head includes a woven rope ring, while the upper portion displays Celtic interlacing with Pictish details at the terminals and decorative bosses. The shaft of the cross is inscribed with the words "Sacred to the memory of officers, NCOs and men of Ratho who fell in the Great War 1914-1918." Below this, there is a plain cross set within interlacing. The broad pedestal base features the names of the war dead, and the rear of the memorial includes names of those who died in World War II.
