Description

The Bridge Inn, located at 27 Baird Road in Ratho, is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey, four-bay inn situated next to the Union Canal. The building features coursed sandstone, which is now painted on the main front, while the side elevations are constructed of rubble with stugged sandstone margins and quoins, and it has a base course.

The main elevation is arranged in a near-symmetrical layout with four bays, with the outer left bay containing a depressed carriage-arch pend that has been glazed and converted, along with an adjacent door. The archway is set in a slightly recessed panel and features an exposed keystone. To the right of this is a narrow two-leaf boarded door with a four-pane letter-box fanlight. The three bays to the right include a central door flanked by windows, and a Bridge Inn sign is positioned above the two outer right bays. The first-floor windows follow the same proportional arrangement as those on the ground floor.

On the left side elevation, there is a gable that has an unsympathetic modern, rendered, flat-roofed bowed addition at the ground floor. A high rubble enclosing wall is located to the left, with rubble featuring semi-circular coping.

The right side elevation also has a gable with a central ground floor window above a raised basement, as the ground steps down to the canal bank. There are two windows at the centre of the first floor, and a modern sign spans the gablehead. A lean-to addition is present at the outer left on the ground floor, along with a flat-roofed single-storey sandstone addition to the right, where the dormerhead of the rear jamb is visible. Additionally, there is a modern pentagonal addition to the right, with stone steps leading down to the canal bank.

The inn features 12-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and ashlar coping to the skews and skewputts. The roof has coped apex stacks and an off-centre ridge stack.
