Description
The Aberdeen Arms Hotel, located in The Square, Tarland, dates from the late 18th century. This two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan inn features a symmetrical main elevation with twin two-storey, three-bay wings at the rear. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked yellow sandstone, with harling on the sides.
The west (principal) elevation presents a broad, symmetrical façade with regular window placement, highlighted by a central two-leaf timber panelled door. The entrance is framed by a plain, slightly projecting margin.
The east (rear) elevation has twin gable ends from the rear wings, which are obscured by modern flat-roofed additions on the ground floor.
On the north (side) elevation, there is a gable end with a single-storey pavilion wing that has a piended roof.
The south (side) elevation features the gable end of the main building on the left. It includes a two-storey, three-bay symmetrical house front with a door at the centre, which leads to the bar entrance of the rear wing on the right. There is also a single-storey modern addition on the outer right.
The windows are four-pane sash and case style, and the roof is covered with grey slates and lead flashing. The building has coped skews with scrolled skew putts and coped gable stacks.
Inside, the hotel retains its original layout, with an entrance leading to a lobby and a central staircase at the rear that accesses the upstairs rooms, while ground floor rooms are located to the left and right. The bar is situated within the range at the rear.
At the back of the inn, there is a single-storey, five-bay gabled steading that forms a courtyard. This structure has irregular fenestration and features a gabled goods door that breaks the eaves on the centre left of the courtyard elevation, along with a corrugated iron addition on the outer left. The gable ends are topped with ball finials.
