Description

The building is a former watermill located on Mill Road in Tarland, dating from the later 19th century. It is a 2-storey, 4-bay structure with an L-plan layout and features a prominent kiln cowl at the roof ridge. The exterior is constructed of yellow sandstone random rubble, accented with squared lintels, rybats, and quoins.

On the east (principal) elevation, there is an advanced, broad gabled bay on the left that connects to a 2-bay main range at the rear. The ground level has glazed timber sliding doors, and there is a glazed former door opening at the gablehead. To the right, there is a slightly taller, 2-bay drying kiln range. The roof features a tall, octagonal, slated kiln flue at the center, topped with a large conical tin cowl.

The west (rear) elevation consists of a double bay with raised skews on the left and a slightly lower double bay on the right, which includes a wallhead goods door that breaks the eaves at the center.

The north (side) elevation is a gable end with a small window at the gablehead. The south (side) elevation shows the gable end of the main range on the left, which is obscured by a later addition, while the right side has a double bay and a right return leading to the front entrance.

The building predominantly features fixed, single pane glazing, with grey slates, lead flashing, and coped skews.

Inside, the main space has been converted into a mechanic's workshop at ground level, with pulleys, hoists, and other mill machinery suspended from the roof timbers. The former drying kiln at the rear retains heavily smoke-stained lime-washed walls.
