Description
Allanton Mill is a later 19th-century mill that was refitted and extended in 1921, which is marked by a date stone. It is a three-storey, single bay, rectangular-plan building, accompanied by a two-storey, square-plan kiln with a pyramidal roof on the right side, and single-storey lean-to wings, one of which is modern. The exterior is constructed from squared and droved sandstone coursers, featuring sliding doors for large openings.
On the west elevation, the gabled mill is centrally located, with a large door at the ground level and a loft door at the centre of the first floor. The date stone from 1921 is positioned between the first and second floors, with a window at the centre of the second storey and a winch bracket at the apex. The kiln to the right has a large door at ground level and a hatch at the centre of the upper storey, topped with a pyramidal roof that includes a steel-capped vent at the apex. There is a lean-to bay on the outer left with a large door, and another lean-to bay on the outer right with a door to the left and a window to the right.
The east elevation features a piended roof on the mill at the centre and a single window at the centre of the first floor. The north elevation shows a three-bay mill with regular fenestration on the first floor, and a lean-to addition at ground level. The south elevation also has three bays, with a single barred window to the right of the first floor of the mill, and the kiln abutting to the left, along with a lean-to addition at ground level.
The windows are timber small-pane sash and case types, and the mill and kiln are covered with grey slates and lead flashing, while the lean-to wings have corrugated iron roofing. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.
Inside, the mill is partially gutted, but some timber chutes, hatches, and hoppers can be seen on the ground floor ceiling.
