Description
Hartwood Hospital in Shotts was built between 1890 and 1895 by J L Murray. It consists of a group of Baronial-style hospital buildings that are the remaining parts of a once much larger complex. The central administration block is large, two stories high, with a double pitched and gabled roof, featuring an advanced gabled bay at the center and paired square clock towers at the northwest corners. There are also two three-story villa-style ward blocks set back on either side, connected to the main block by remnants of glazed corridors. These corridors link to a large single-story, roughly T-shaped range of ancillary buildings at the rear. The clock towers have single round angle stair turrets at the front corners, crenulated parapets, and openings for former clock faces on each side, although the clock faces are damaged. The buildings are constructed from bull-faced cream sandstone rubble masonry with ashlar dressings, featuring canted bays, transomed and mullioned windows, and crowstepped gables. The southwest villa has a grey slate roof, while other parts of the complex have been left roofless since 2013.
