Allanton Well, Brucefield Farm, Allanton Road, Allanton

Dated 1813, the Allanton Well is a small, semicircular wellhead situated at Brucefield Farm on Allanton Road, Allanton. The wellhead is constructed from ashlar sandstone, with the front faces treated with vermiculation. It features a half-hemispherical head and retains the remains of a lion mask pipe, inset with a semicircular plaque bearing a Latin inscription.

The inscription commemorates the death of Allan Stewarton, the founder of the Allanton estate, who participated in fighting against the English at the Battle of Morningside. Originally, the well was equipped with a cup and chain. Though now situated within woodland, the well originally stood on the route of the old estate toll road, which formed part of the main Edinburgh-Ayr road. This road was relocated north in 1817 following the creation of the artificial loch at Allanton House. The original Tollhouse was located at No 1 Church Road in Bonkle (see separate listing).
