Primrose Cottage, 4 Baird Road, Ratho

Summerhall, located at 6 Baird Road in Ratho, is a pair of cottages dating from around 1830. The cottages are single storey with an attic and have a rectangular plan with five bays. They are constructed from squared and coursed whinstone, featuring stugged sandstone margins and pilaster quoins, while the side elevations are made of sandstone rubble. The design includes an eaves band and a base course.

The main elevation shows Primrose Cottage, which has three bays on the right, and Summerhall Cottage, which has two bays on the left. The window cills are supported by paired stone brackets, and above the doors are depressed triangular pediments that rest on shaped ashlar brackets, with the names of the cottages inscribed. There are a pair of bipartite dormers above the second and third bays, with a skylight to the left of the left dormer. Windows are also present in the gableheads of the left and return elevations, featuring four-pane sash and case windows. The roofs are steeply pitched and covered with grey slate, with ashlar coping at the skews and bracketted skewputts. The cottages have apex stacks and a central ridge stack.

Surrounding the property is a coursed whinstone wall topped with ashlar slab coping, and there are sandstone obelisk piers marking the entrance.
