Description

52, 54, 56 Marchmont Road is a four-storey, five-bay tenement building designed by Thomas P Marwick in 1889. It is part of a terrace and is constructed from squared and snecked pink sandstone, featuring polished red ashlar dressings. The building includes a base course, a cill course at the second floor, a cornice above the second floor, and pedimented dormer heads above bipartite windows on the third floor. The advanced bays have facetted pyramidal roofs topped with lead finials, and the doorways are roll-moulded with chamfered reveals.

On the entrance elevation, the central bay features a doorway with a single window to the left. The doorway has a boarded door and a plate glass fanlight above it, with bipartite windows on each floor above. There is another doorway in the second bay with a panelled door and a small-pane fanlight, along with single windows above. To the right, a doorway is flanked by a single window in the outer right bay, which also has a panelled door and a small-pane fanlight, with bipartite windows above. The first and fourth bays have full-height four-light canted windows, with dividing cill and lintel courses and a string course at the cornice above the third floor. The windows are plate glass sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a corniced wallhead stack, coped and rendered mutual stacks, and a box dormer above the second bay. Some original rainwater goods, including a hopper, are still present. The property has a low boundary wall along the street. The interiors were not seen in 1991.
