Description
28 Battery Place is a mid-19th century house, built around 1855, with later additions at the rear from the mid to late 20th century. This two-storey building with an attic features a plain classical style and is part of an irregular pair with the adjacent property at No 27. It is constructed from whitewashed coursed rubble sandstone and includes a raised base course, an eaves course beneath corniced eaves, and a painted blocking course. The house has pilastered quoins, a pilastered entrance, painted surrounds to its openings, and a full-width decorative cast-iron balcony on the first floor.
On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a recessed timber panelled door in the outer left bay, which has replacement glazing, and a 6-light fanlight above. The entrance is framed by a pilastered doorpiece with a plain frieze, cornice, and block pediment. There are single windows at ground level in the centre and outer right bays, as well as single windows in all bays on the first floor. A 3-light canted dormer is offset to the right of centre. The single-storey addition to the left has modern glazing.
The northeast (side) elevation features a piended single-storey addition in the outer left bay and a flat-roofed single-storey addition in the outer right bay, with a large stair window at the centre. The front of the house has 2-pane timber sash and case windows, while the side has a 32-pane timber sash and case stair window and a rooflight offset to the left of centre. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, has raised stone skews, corniced apex stacks, and original octagonal cans.
Inside, the property has been adapted for use as bed and breakfast accommodation and features some plaster cornice work. The staircase includes decorative cast-iron uprights and a timber handrail. The boundary is marked by a low coped wall along Battery Place.
