Description

Ash Villa, located at 47 High Street in Ayton, is a mid-19th century house that has undergone later additions and alterations. This symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay house is designed in a plain classical style and features a single-storey wing at the rear, creating a near L-plan shape. The front is constructed from squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone, while the sides and rear are harled. Notable architectural details include a base course, long and short quoins, surrounds to openings, and projecting cills.

On the southwest (entrance) elevation, there is a centrally placed timber panelled door at ground level, topped by a plate glass fanlight. A single window is aligned above on the first floor, with additional single windows in the flanking bays on both floors.

The southeast (side) elevation features a blind elevation on the left side due to the two-storey block, while the right side has a blind elevation for the projecting single-storey addition.

The northeast (rear) elevation includes a gabled wing that projects to the outer left, with various single windows on both floors in bays that are recessed to the right.

The northwest (side) elevation was not visible during the 1998 inspection.

The front of the house has 8-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with a pitched roof on the rear wing. There are corniced, brick-built wallhead stacks on the southeast and northwest sides, along with various chimney cans and a squat apex stack at the rear.

The interior was not seen during the 1998 inspection. The property is enclosed by a low coped rendered boundary wall at the front.
