Description
The Rowans is a possibly late 18th century house with later additions and alterations, located on High Street in Ayton. This two-storey building has a basement and features a four-bay façade, although there are only three bays at the first floor. It is constructed of rubble with rubble sandstone dressings, and has droved long and short surrounds to its openings, painted margins, and projecting cills.
The northeast (entrance) elevation has a timber panelled door in the center at ground level, flanked by a two-pane fanlight above. There is a single window directly above the door. To the outer right, there is a corniced, canted window at ground level with a single window aligned above it. There is a blocked, panelled door off-set to the left of center at ground level, with single windows on both floors in the subsequent bay to the left. The basement features a large two-leaf boarded timber door in a segmental-arched opening, off-set to the outer left.
The windows are plate glass timber sash and case types. The roof is covered with grey slate and has stone-coped skews, along with corniced ridge stacks and various circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998. The property is enclosed by a low coped boundary wall at the front, which includes stop-chamfered, square-plan ashlar piers with shallow pyramidal caps at the outer left and right.
