Description

The Beechwood Hotel, located on Bishop Terrace in Rothesay, Bute, is a classical style house built in the mid to later 19th century. It features a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay near-square plan and was converted into separate holiday apartments in the later 20th century. The building has a recessed central section and a single-storey addition at the rear. It is constructed of stugged coursed yellow sandstone with yellow sandstone ashlar dressings. Notable architectural details include a painted plinth, corbelled cornices above the ground floor openings, and anthemion parapet detailing above the corbelled cornice. The quoins are raised and polished, while the ground floor windows have moulded reveals and chamfered cills. The first-floor windows are round-arched with columnar reveals, raised voussoir surrounds, sandstone columnar mullions, and projecting cills that are corbelled at the sides.

On the west elevation, there are stairs leading to a central two-leaf timber panelled door that is recessed at the ground level, topped by a round-arched plate-glass fanlight. The advanced porch features flanking columns, engaged pilasters, a bracketed cornice, and a balustraded parapet, with a single window aligned above on the first floor. The outer left and right bays contain four-light canted windows at the ground level, while the first floor has bipartite windows.

The south elevation is three-bay with a single-storey addition on the outer right. There are single windows at the ground level in the outer left and right bays, with round-arched windows in all bays at the first floor. The windows throughout are two-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a piend, along with corniced, coursed sandstone ridge and wallhead stacks, and corniced square cans.

The interior of the building is relatively intact, showcasing a barrel-vaulted vestibule, timber panelled doors, and a grand stair leading to the rear.

The boundary wall consists of a swept coped stugged yellow sandstone wall along Bishop Terrace, complemented by whitewashed double gatepiers that feature fluted panels, a raised base course, and a bracketed cornice flanking the entrance. A cast-iron lamp stand surmounts the outer west pier.
