Description
44 East Princes Street in Rothesay, Bute, is a pair of near-symmetrical, three-storey tenements built in 1843, designed in a plain classical style. The building forms a single block, with No 43 featuring five bays and a painted pilastered entrance centered at the ground level, while No 44 has three bays with a painted pilastered entrance located in the outer right bay. The structure is made of coursed rubble sandstone with polished sandstone dressings, including a raised base course, an architraved string course, a raised lintel course, and corniced eaves. The quoins are droved cream rubble, and the polished openings have droved long and short rubble surrounds with projecting cills.
On the northwest elevation, the entrance to No 43 has steps leading up to it, a replacement door, and a plate-glass fanlight. The entrance is framed by a pilastered doorpiece that includes a plain frieze, cornice, block pediment, and a raised keystone dated "1843". There are single windows in the bays to the left and right of the entrance, with regular fenestration in all bays on the first and second floors. For No 44, the entrance steps are located in the outer right bay, featuring a replacement door and a plate-glass fanlight, also surrounded by a pilastered doorpiece with similar detailing. The ground floor has single windows in the remaining bays, with regular fenestration on the first and second floors.
The glazing is predominantly modern, with No 43 having 6-pane upper and plate glass lower sash and case windows on the first floor, alongside some 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features coped ridges and apex stacks that are rendered, along with various circular cans.
Additionally, there is a low coped whitewashed boundary wall along East Princes Street.
