Description

East Firwood consists of a near-symmetrical pair of late 19th century houses, likely dating to around 1882, situated on Glenburn Road, Rothesay, Bute. The buildings, constructed as a block of four bays with recessed central sections, feature projecting piended bays to the outer left and right, and recessed entrance porches on each side. Single-storey L-shaped wings are attached to the rear. The houses are built with random rubble whinstone, highlighted by yellow sandstone dressings. Architectural details include a raised base course, string course, timber brackets under overhanging corniced eaves, raised yellow sandstone quoins, surrounds to droved openings, and slightly chamfered cills (with projecting cills to the single-storey rear wings).

The front (north) elevation showcases bipartite windows at both floors in the recessed central bays, and projecting tripartite windows at ground level in the advanced outer bays, with aligned bipartite windows above. Bracketed balconies are found at the first floor level. Specific features include an arcaded timber pilaster with supporting bracketed eaves under the piend roof on the western house, and a tripartite piended dormer centred in the pyramidal roof of the eastern house.

The side (east and west) elevations are three bays in width. A centrally positioned projecting porch is accessed by steps, featuring timber pilasters, brackets, a boarded timber roof, and a decorative timber balustrade. A 2-leaf timber panelled door, with a part-glazed timber panelled vestibule door and plate-glass fanlight, is set within a sandstone surround. A bipartite window is positioned above the entrance, and single windows are at both floor levels in the outer bays (East Firwood and West Firwood). Large, part-stained stair-lights are present in these outer bays. L-plan wings extend to the south.

The windows are predominantly timber casements with a geometric-patterned five-light upper section and plate-glass lower sections. The rear of the building features four- and six-pane timber sash and case windows. The stair windows have stained surrounds and opaque glazing. The roofs are covered in graded grey slate, with slate-hung dormers and a bell-cast pyramidal roof to the outer left. The rear L-plan wings also have slated piend roofs. Replacement rainwater goods are in place. The ridge and wallhead stacks are topped with slightly bull-faced sandstone coped details and circular cans. The interior was not inspected in 1996.
