Description

2 Crichton Road is a late 19th-century symmetrical double villa, consisting of two flatted units arranged in a 1-1-1 grouping. The building is two stories high with three bays, featuring a recessed central section and advanced gabled bays on the outer left and right, each with side entrances. It is constructed from coursed yellow sandstone ashlar with red sandstone ashlar dressings, including a red sandstone base course. The ground floor has canted windows with timber bracketed eaves, while the roof has overhanging timber bracketed eaves and decorative timber bargeboards, although the bargeboards on No 2 are missing. The building displays raised quoins and raised long and short surrounds to its openings, with shouldered-arched designs at the ground level and pointed-arched designs at the first floor. The reveals and lintels are chamfered, with architraved lintels at the ground level and sandstone mullions.

On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a quadripartite window centered at the ground level and a gable-headed bipartite window above that breaks the eaves. The advanced bays on the outer left and right feature three-light canted windows at the ground level, while the first floor has gothicised Palladian windows with columnar mullions and pointed-arch central lights. The side entries are recessed on the outer left and right.

The building predominantly has 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, although there is replacement glazing at the ground level on the outer left. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and the rainwater goods have been replaced. There are coursed sandstone stacks with various cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996.

The boundary wall and gatepiers consist of a coped, whitewashed render wall that encloses the site at the front. Flanking the pedestrian entrances are painted, panelled square-plan piers with chamfered edges, heavy cornices, and triangular-faceted caps.
