Description

3 Crichton Road is a late 19th-century symmetrical double villa that stands two stories high and features three bays arranged in a 1-1-1 grouping. The building has a recessed central section with advanced gabled bays on the outer left and right, and side entrances. It is constructed from coursed yellow sandstone ashlar with red sandstone ashlar dressings. The villa has a red sandstone base course and timber bracketed eaves above the ground floor canted windows, along with overhanging timber bracketed eaves and plain timber bargeboards. Notable architectural details include raised quoins and raised long and short surrounds for the openings, which are shouldered-arched at the ground floor and pointed-arched at the first floor. The reveals and lintels are chamfered, with the ground floor lintels being architraved, and there are sandstone mullions.

On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a quadripartite window centered at the ground level and a gable-headed bipartite window that breaks the eaves above. The advanced bays on the outer left and right feature three-light canted windows at the ground level, while the first floor has gothicised Palladian windows with columnar mullions and pointed-arch central lights. The side entries are recessed to the outer left and right.

The villa predominantly has 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, although there is replacement glazing at the ground level on the outer left. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and the rainwater goods have been replaced. There are coursed sandstone stacks for No 3, while No 4 is missing.

The boundary wall and gatepiers consist of a coped, part-rendered wall that encloses the site at the front. The pedestrian entrances are flanked by painted, panelled square-plan piers with chamfered edges, heavy cornices, and triangular-faceted caps.
