Description
Auchendarroch is a mid-19th century Italianate villa, likely designed by William Motherwell. It is a two-storey, three-bay building with a rectangular plan and a bowed rear projection. The villa is constructed of honey-coloured sandstone ashlar with ashlar margins and dressings, while the side and rear elevations are harled. A base course, band course, projecting bracketed lead eaves canopy, stop-chamfered arrises, and rusticated quoins are prominent features. The principal floor features depressed arch windows.
The south elevation is the main facade. A swept, canted, full-height bay with concave facets is located on the outer right. The entrance bay is to the left, featuring a shallow corniced porch with a frieze detailed with triglyphs, a blocking course, a depressed arch opening, and a rusticated keystone. The porch returns are fitted with shallow pierced arches. A two-leaf panelled door is set within the opening, and a bipartite window is above it at the first floor. A three-stage square tower is on the outer left, with a two-storey, tripartite projecting bay and a bipartite window at the upper stage.
The east elevation is harled and lined, with bipartite windows to the outer right and left, and a blank wall to the outer left. The west elevation showcases the tower to the outer right, featuring a bipartite window at the upper stage to the right. A two-bay block is to the outer left, with a window to the left and bipartites to the outer left.
The north (rear) elevation is roughly harled with sandstone margins. It has windows to the outer right and left at the upper floor and a wallhead stack at the centre. Canted slate-hung dormers are positioned to the right and left. A single-storey bowed projection is at the centre, with a door and window on both the east and west elevations. A modern stair provides access to flatted accommodation on the west elevation.
Plate glass timber sash and case windows are present, along with 12-pane sash and case dormer windows. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead flashings and coped wallhead stacks topped with octagonal cans.
The interior includes a half-glazed, etched vestibule door and an enclosed stair. A room to the right off the hall features decorative plasterwork, floral rosette details, and a plain block marble fireplace. The stair is exposed within the upper flat, accessed via the single-storey jamb, and includes cast-iron balusters and a wooden rail. Stained glass roof lighting illuminates the upper landing and stair, depicting figurative scenes of a hunter, a fisher, and a chemist.
A low whinstone boundary wall with ashlar saddleback coping encloses the property. Square pier bases have stop-chamfered arrises and swept flat caps. A decorative cast-iron gate with circle motifs stands alongside a similar pedestrian gate to the west.
