Description

64-68 Montague Street is a three-storey tenement building dating from around 1820, located in Rothesay, Bute. It forms the end of a terrace and features four bays facing Montague Street to the south and a single bay on Tower Street to the east. The ground floor is finished in painted render, while the upper floors are constructed of cherry-cocked grey rubble sandstone. The building has corniced eaves, stugged pink rubble sandstone quoins, and stugged long and short surrounds framing polished openings with projecting cills.

On the south elevation (Montague Street), there is a replacement part-glazed timber door in the central bay, accompanied by an opaque fanlight. Shops are located to the left and right of this entrance, with a heavy blocking course above. The first and second floors are regularly fenestrated across all bays, featuring a slightly recessed full-height bow at the outer right angle, which includes a replacement door at ground level and single windows on both floors above.

The east elevation (Tower Street) has a shop at ground level and single windows on both the first and second floors, offset to the right of centre. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case types. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a rendered apex stack to the west, although the cans are missing.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1996.
