Description
74-76 High Street in Montrose is a mid-18th century tenement with later alterations. It stands three stories high with an attic, featuring two bays and a gable front as part of an irregular terrace. The front is finished with lined render, while the rear is constructed from rubble stone. It has a base course, a cornice above the ground floor, and raised margins.
The principal elevation has three irregular bays at the ground level, framed by four cast-iron columns with Corinthian capitals. There are doors to the right and center with fielded panels above, and a shop window to the left that includes a low stall riser, plate glass, a fascia panel, and a cornice above. The first and second floors are symmetrical, with a small window in an asymmetrical corniced gablehead.
The north elevation adjoins 72 High Street, while the south elevation adjoins 76 High Street. The west elevation features irregular fenestration and has a later addition of an attic storey to the left.
The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate roof. A prominent tall gablehead stack is located on the east side, featuring lined render, a dentil cornice, and three cans. The interior was not seen in 1997.
