Description
Grange House, located on Grange Road in Monifieth, Dundee, was designed by James Black in 1829, with an early 20th-century sympathetic addition. This is a two-storey mansion with an irregular six-bay rectangular plan, featuring classical detailing. The exterior is harled with painted ashlar dressings and V-section channelled quoins, topped by a piended slate roof with corniced, panelled stacks. The windows are primarily 2-pane sash and case, with smaller windows on the upper floors, although some have been replaced with uPVC in a different style.
On the south elevation, the original three-bay section includes a base course and a central doorway flanked by channelled pilasters, leading to a square Doric portico with an entablature. There is a two-storey canted bay on the west side, and a window with moulded architraves above the door. On the east side, the ground floor features a similar window set within large channelled pilasters, complete with a moulded cill and cornice, while the first floor has a simple pilastered window. A cill course runs along the first floor on the south and east elevations, with a modillion cornice and blocking course present on the south, east, and west elevations. The eastern addition includes a large canted ground floor window and three single symmetrical windows on the first floor, all with architraves.
The east and west elevations display asymmetrical windows with bracketed cills, and there is a large five-light bow window on the east side. To the south of the main drive, there are gatepiers that possibly reuse late 17th-century stone; these squat ashlar structures have moulded bases and ogival caps, along with remnants of side scrolls.
