Description

Milton House Hotel, located on Grange Road in Monifieth, Dundee, is a 2-storey, irregular 5-bay house built in 1912 by architects Patrick Thoms and William F Wilkie. Designed in the Scots 17th century style, the building features harled walls with polished dressings and a stone slate roof, along with a variety of small-pane sash and case windows.

On the east elevation, there is an off-centre entrance that has a roll-moulded architrave and a lintel panel with a scroll motif reading "TA NA 1912" at the shoulders. The entrance consists of a 2-leaf door with grilles covering small lights. To the right of the entrance, there are three small windows, and above, three first-floor windows with dormerheads and cavetto segmentally pedimented architraves. A wide crowstepped gable is located to the left, featuring a coped apex stack and single windows on both the ground and first floors. A similar projecting gable is found on the right, which has no stack and a centrally positioned window in the gable at the first floor. There is a porch in the re-entrant angle with a small architraved window above and a large hopper for the rainwater pipe.

The south elevation has three 12-pane sash and case windows on the first floor, while the ground floor is obscured by a modern timber addition. The west elevation mirrors the gable on the east elevation, with three dormerheads similar to those on the east. It also features three windows and a door on the ground floor, along with a projecting asymmetrical 2-storey gabled porch to the left that has round-arched openings and a large hopper for the rainwater pipe, as seen on the east elevation.

In the garden, there is a generating shed with a square plan, harled walls, and a slate piend roof.

Inside, the hotel boasts a panelled entrance hall, a scale and platt staircase with turned timber balusters, and a cove ceiling adorned with a rose pattern relief border decoration. The ground floor includes a panelled room with a beamed ceiling and a plaster frieze featuring a vine and grape motif over the chimneybreast.
