Description
This is a 7-arch railway viaduct built between 1869 and 1870 by John Willet and George Mackay, the engineers for the Forfar District Railway, which ran from Dundee to Forfar and was opened by the Caledonian Railway Company. The viaduct crosses the Dighty Water and was constructed by William Leslie. The structure is built of roughly dressed, pink rubble sandstone with the arch stones surrounded by finer detailing, and red brick soffits. The piers are angled and supported by large, rock-faced corbels and decorative blocks below the rounded arches. Giant pilasters run along the north and south sides, topped by a substantial parapet constructed of large stone blocks with a corniced top. Modern wrought-iron railings were added by the District Council to allow pedestrian access. The viaduct is no longer used for railway purposes but remains a prominent and attractive feature of the surrounding landscape.
