Description
This is a row of four single-story, three-bay cottages, with an attached two-story stable and industrial block at the west end, dating from around 1839. The cottages were built with rubble stone and have pink sandstone dressings; the original harling is now mostly gone. They are topped with a grey slate roof and have ashlar and brick stacks. The attached block is constructed of coursed rubble whinstone with pink sandstone dressings, also originally harled and now weathered, with a grey slate roof that is piended at the east end. The cottages feature 12-pane sash and case windows with painted margins, although some window frames are boarded or missing.
The south elevation shows the cottages on the right-hand side, each with a central door flanked by windows. A stop-chamfered angle is visible at the far right, and the return elevation is blank. The ridge has tiles; the cottage on the left is slightly higher and has vents and terracotta ridge tiles. The west block has a ground-floor door and three windows, and four windows on the first floor. An advanced bay built of brick and rubble is on the left, showing evidence of fire damage, while ventilators are at the ridge.
The west gable has two gabled bays, with a brick lean-to on the left concealing an entrance. A large door is located on the first floor, and a bay at the right is blank.
The north elevation is blank on the cottages on the left, with lean-to projections. The block on the right has doors and various windows and has been altered with the addition of lean-to structures.
Internally, at least one cottage contains a cooking range. An east section of the west block includes a four-stall stable with timber trevises, and the roof is a King post design.
The cottages form a group with Balmossie Mill, the Road Bridge over the Dichty Water, Bleachfield House/Tenement, and the Panmure Bleachfield, Road Bridge over the Dichty Water. The Panmure bleachfield, established in 1839 by Daniel Drimmie of Aberdeen, evolved from the earlier Balgillo bleachfield previously held by the Wemys family. The bleachfield ceased operations in 1932. The cottages represent a good, largely unaltered, if dilapidated example of 19th-century workers' housing. Remains of the bleachfield are visible nearby, including a brick shed incorporating a dovecot.
