Description

The Panmurefield Cottages, dating to circa 1839, comprise a row of four single-storey, three-bay cottages with a two-storey stable and industrial block attached to the west. The cottages are built of rubble with pink sandstone dressings, originally harled but now with the harling largely fallen away, and have grey slate roofs with ashlar and brick stacks. The western block is of coursed rubble whinstone, also originally harled and now with the render largely lost, with pink sandstone dressings and a grey slate roof, piended at the east. The cottages feature 12-pane sash and case windows with painted margins, although the window frames are boarded or missing in places.

The south elevation shows the cottages on the right, each with a central door and flanking windows. The most easterly cottage has a stop-chamfered angle, and a blank return elevation, with ridge tiles. The cottage furthest to the left is slightly higher and incorporates vents and terracotta ridge tiles. The western block has a ground floor door and three windows, and four windows on the first floor. An advanced bay of brick and rubble is positioned to the left, reflecting previous fire damage, and the roof has ventilators.

The west gable features two gabled bays with a brick lean-to on the left, which obscures the entrance; a large door is present on the first floor, and a blank bay is set to the right.

The north elevation is blank on the cottages to the left and features lean-to projections. The western block has doors and various windows, and has been altered with other lean-to additions.

Internally, at least one cottage contains a cooking range. An east-facing stable block, containing timber trevises, is located beside the western block. The stable has a king post roof.

The site forms a group of buildings with Balmossie Mill, the Road Bridge over the Dichty Water, Bleachfield House/Tenement, and the Panmure Bleachfield, Road Bridge over Dichty Water. The Panmure bleachfield was established in 1839 by Daniel Drimmie of Aberdeen, evolving from the earlier Balgillo bleachfield previously owned by the Wemys family. The bleachfield ceased operation in 1932. The cottages represent a good, albeit dilapidated, example of 19th-century workers' housing. Remains of the bleachfield are present, including a brick shed incorporating a dovecot.
