Description

The Panmurefield Cottages, located in Balmossie, Dundee, date to around 1839. They consist of a row of four single-storey, three-bay cottages, accompanied by a two-storey stable and industrial block attached to the west. The cottages are constructed of rubble with pink sandstone dressings, originally harled but now with the render largely falling away, and have grey slate roofs with ashlar and brick stacks. The western block is of coursed rubble whinstone, also originally harled but now deteriorated, with pink sandstone dressings and a grey slate roof that is piended at the east end. The cottages feature 12-pane sash and case windows with painted margins, although some window frames are boarded or missing.

The south elevation shows the cottages on the right, each with a central door flanked by windows. A stop-chamfered angle is visible at the far right, and a blank return elevation is present. The cottage furthest to the left is slightly higher and includes vents and terracotta ridge tiles. The western block has a door and three windows on the ground floor, and four windows on the first floor. A projecting bay of brick and rubble is located on the left side of the block, which demonstrates evidence of fire damage. The block also has ventilators in the ridge and margined angles.

The west gable features two gabled bays, with a brick lean-to on the left concealing an entrance. A large door is located on the first floor, and a blank bay is present on the right.

The north elevation is blank on the cottages to the left and exhibits lean-to projections. The block to the right has doors and various windows, and has been altered with additional lean-to constructions.

The interiors of the cottages include a cooking range in at least one cottage, and a four-stall stable with timber trevises located at the east end of the western block, which also has a king post roof.

The site’s historic significance is closely linked with Balmossie Mill and nearby structures, including the Road Bridge over Dichty Water, the Bleachfield, House/Tenement, and the Panmure Bleachfield, Road Bridge over Dichty Water. The Panmure bleachfield was established in 1839 by Daniel Drimmie of Aberdeen, evolving from an earlier bleachfield previously held by the Wemys family. The bleachfield ceased operations in 1932. The cottages represent a good, though now somewhat dilapidated, example of 19th-century workers’ housing. Remnants of the bleachfield remain, including a brick shed with an integrated dovecot.
