Description
This is a later 19th-century road bridge located in Balmossie, Dundee, spanning the Dichty Water. The bridge is a single arch structure built of local coursed rubble, with some areas of snecked rubble repairs at the northwest. It features a segmental arch constructed with smooth ashlar voussoirs and a rounded coping to the parapets.
The bridge is part of a group of buildings and structures associated with Balmossie Mill and the Panmure Bleachfield, including Balmossie Mill, the bleachfield's cottages and stable block, a house/tenement, and another road bridge over the Dichty Water. The nearby ruined chapel of Eglismonichty, dedicated to St Andrew, may date back to the 8th century and continued in use until after the Reformation. A mill stood nearby from at least 1692; suggesting an earlier bridge may have existed on the site. Ordnance Survey maps from 1857-58 and 1901 indicate the existing bridge likely dates from the expansion of the mill in the later 19th century.
