Description

The Gilroy Mausoleum, dated 1892, was designed by John Murray Robertson and is located within Barnhill Cemetery, Dundee. It is a single-storey structure with a semi-basement, set upon a coped ashlar dais with a rectangular plan. The mausoleum is constructed of ashlar with a stone slab roof. Decorative wrought-iron railings, featuring a robust floral design, lions sejant, and stylized dolphin finials, surround the structure. Architectural features include a base course, buttresses, louvred lancet windows with chamfered arrises, a corbelled eaves course and continuous hoodmould, and crowstepped gables.

The south gable is approached by five steps leading to a moulded Tudor-arched entrance with a hoodmould and label stops bearing carved numerals '18' and '92'. Full-height wrought-iron gates, panelled at the base, are positioned within this arch. The gable displays carved ashlar ciphers 'G' for George Gilroy and 'SR' for his wife, Sarah Reid, along with the Gilroy family armorial at the gablehead. A carved lion sejant with armorial finial tops the gable. The east and west elevations each have four buttresses alternating with three lancet windows.

The interior is blind and contains a tripartite, Tudor-arched memorial panel with carved armorial bearings dated 1892, along with inscribed marble panels commemorating various members of the Gilroy family. A tomb is located beneath the memorial panel.

The mausoleum was erected for George Gilroy of Castleroy (1815-1892), and its Tudor arch and crowstepped gables reflect the style of the demolished Castleroy mansion. The design was a collaboration between Andrew Heiton and John Murray Robertson, beginning in 1867. Original drawings, along with those of Castleroy, are held by Historic Environment Scotland.
