Description
The Gorse is a two-story house situated at 11 Panmure Terrace, Barnhill, Dundee, with a history spanning several periods from around 1800. The original core of the house is an L-shaped structure dating to circa 1800, to which a gable was added in the early 19th century. In the later 19th century, the house was extended with an L-shaped addition designed by James MacLaren.
The exterior is primarily dry-dashed, previously rendered and lined, with painted ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The windows are sash and case, incorporating both four-pane and twelve-pane arrangements, with painted margins. A continuous cill course runs along the southern elevation of the later 19th century addition. Deep eaves display exposed rafter and purlin ends, adding visual interest, along with plain bargeboards and coped stacks. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
The south elevation features a door with a fanlight, sheltered by a corniced, flat-roofed open porch with chamfered piers, consoled lintels, and a decorative cast-iron parapet. A slightly projecting gable on the right incorporates a tripartite window on both the ground and first floors, with round-headed windows and cast-iron colonette mullions. An earlier 19th-century gable to the left has a two-story canted window, topped with a round-headed window. A former corniced entrance porch is now blocked, with a window where the door once stood. The west elevation features a central three-bay section with patio doors replacing original windows; a modern conservatory obscures a further original window and gable to the right. The first floor has three twelve-pane windows, and a shouldered stack rises through the eaves. To the left is a single-story bay with a door and window protected by security bars. The east elevation shows a gable with a first-floor window, and a bay containing windows on both ground and first floors. The north elevation has two windows at the center, with an original advanced gable on the right, featuring windows on both ground and first floors. Further to the right is a single-story gable with two windows protected by security bars, and a blank, later 19th-century gable.
The interior retains some original features, including an encaustic tile floor in the entrance porch, some original fireplaces, and decorative plasterwork cornices. The compartmentalized ceilings in the dining and drawing rooms of the later 19th century addition are also noteworthy.
Adjacent to the house is a circa 1800 coach house and stable, adjoining the north-east boundary wall. The coach house and stable are constructed of coursed and random rubble with ashlar dressings under a slate roof. A two-bay section boasts carriage doors with door pins and a hayloft door, while a lower bay to the left has a bituminous roof.
The boundary walls are constructed of rubble, with a new rubble wall to the west and a rendered and lined wall to the south, complete with cast-iron railings. Two pyramidal-capped, chamfered gatepiers stand on the right, while two plainer pyramidal-capped gatepiers are located on the left.
The house, known as Marybank House in 1857-8, is situated within its original plot.
