Description

Longcroft is a substantial, two-storey and attic house with a single-storey and basement element, built in 1922 to a 'Queen Anne' style design by Charles Soutar of MacLaren, Soutar and Salmond. It occupies a rectangular plot on falling ground in Barnhill, Dundee, and incorporates a former service wing known as Myrtle Cottage. The house is largely harled with brick detailing, and has red tile roofing, tall panelled brick stacks with corbelled coping, and a brick base course. The windows are mainly 8-, 12- and 15-pane sash and case, with moulded cills, and the eaves are deeply dentilled, topped by a piended roof.

The north elevation features an off-centre advanced entrance porch with round-headed arches and a coped, shaped gable facing the roadside. A studded oak door leads to the entrance, and a garage is attached to the left. The fenestration is asymmetrical on the ground floor, with three stepped stair windows centrally on the first floor and a single window to the right. Rooflights are also present.

The south elevation is five-bay and symmetrical. A semi-circular, corniced, distyle Doric portico, now with later glazing, is centrally located and set on steps with an iron balustrade above. French doors with attached windows are positioned at the first floor, while the left and right bays have single windows on both the ground and first floors. A more modern dormer has been inserted at centre.

The east gable adjoins Myrtle Cottage at ground level. The main house features two windows at the principal floor and one at the first floor, with a brick chimneybreast at the centre, projecting through the eaves with a shouldered stack.

The west gable is symmetrical with two bays. It has French doors on the ground floor to the right and a single window to the left, with two windows on the first floor.

The interior of Longcroft retains original plasterwork, panelling, chimneypieces and doors of a high quality throughout the main house, along with original door furniture, bell pushes and electrical switches. The hall features an oak cantilevered well stair with barley-sugar balusters, small-pane windows with mottled glass, and decorative plasterwork to the ceiling. The drawing room boasts a moulded marble chimneypiece with a timber mantle, round-headed glazed alcoves flanking radiators, and plaster panelling and cornices. Sliding doors lead to a similar dining room. The study has full-height oak panelling with carved foliate moulding and built-in bookcases, a chimneypiece resembling those in the drawing and dining rooms, and decorative plasterwork to the ceiling. Bedrooms have finely moulded chimneypieces and built-in wardrobes, and some retain decorative cornices.

Myrtle Cottage, the former service wing, has two doors and small-pane windows on its north elevation. The south elevation includes a basement and a central door. A tripartite window is located to the left, and three single windows are on the right at the principal floor, with a bipartite and bull's-eye window to the left.

The house was built for Mr Robert Lindsay, an engineer. Charles Soutar’s design was influenced by the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens.
