Description

Rowanlee, located at 15 Panmure Terrace in Barnhill, is an Italianate villa built around 1865 by James MacLaren. This two-storey and attic building features an irregular plan and is constructed from stugged snecked and random rubble masonry, with painted dressings. It has moulded ashlar stacks with uniform original cans and a slate roof. The elevations include a base course and a moulded lintel course on the south and west sides. The windows are a mix of 2-and 4-pane sash case styles with corbelled cills and keystones, as well as segmental and round-arched architrave windows on the first floor. The gables are adorned with bracketed eaves.

On the southeast elevation, there is an entrance porch set back in a re-entrant at the right, featuring a pier with a star motif frieze, a moulded entablature, and scroll brackets. A window is set back on the first floor. The main gable is advanced to the left of the door, with a canted window on the ground floor and a round-headed bipartite window on the first floor, which has pilastered jambs and a squat octagonal gablehead stack. To the left, a two-bay section is set back, with a slightly advanced tripartite window on the ground floor that has a bracketed segmental pediment above the central light, and two segmental windows on the first floor that break the eaves with gabled dormerheads, along with a small box dormer.

The west elevation features a gabled bay on the right with a single and a blocked window on the ground floor, and a single window on the first floor with angle pilasters and a squat shouldered gable stack. To the left, there is a slightly advanced bipartite window on the ground floor and a window on the first floor with a gabled dormerhead.

On the east elevation, the entrance porch is located on the left, while the right side has a gable with a large segmental leaded window on the first floor. There is a lower single storey and attic wing on the right with a barred window, and a single storey piended projection at the far right.

Inside, the villa features a panelled lobby with an encaustic tile floor, a cloakroom with dado and an early Doulton basin, and some foliate cornices. The chimneypieces are not original, and there is a well stair with mannered turned balusters, along with a stair window that has stained glass border glazing.

The boundary wall at the south boundary is made of stugged coursed stone and includes two gatepiers of differing designs.
