Barnhill Cemetery, Barnhill, Dundee

Barnhill Cemetery, opened in 1869, is a large municipal cemetery situated in Dundee. It was established to replace the Old Burial Ground at Chapel Lane, a decision partly driven by a cholera epidemic in 1866. The cemetery contains numerous notable 19th-century gravestones.

The boundary is defined by rubble walls on the north, east, and west sides, stepped at intervals and topped with saddleback coping. A lower wall with iron railings runs along the south side. Two buttressed gatepiers of octagonal ashlar construction stand at Strathmore Street, each topped with elaborate finialled pyramidal caps, and flanked by cast and wrought-iron gates. A second pair of gatepiers, chamfered and square in section, are located at Edzell Street, with gablet caps, and also feature cast and wrought-iron gates.
