Description

Lochton House is an early 19th century, two-storey and raised basement country house of rectangular plan, attributed to James Black. It is a three-bay design with small classical detailing. The walls are of rubble construction with pink ashlar dressings, and a slate platform roof. The upper floors are slightly set back from the basement, separated by a thin band course. Thinly-margined angles and windows are present, with a thin cill band to the principal, south-facing elevation, a band course to the first floor, and a shallow corniced parapet. Most windows are 12-pane sash and case windows, taller on the principal floor, and recessed within ashlar panels on the south elevation.

The south elevation features a slightly advanced central bay with steps oversailing the basement to a tripartite doorpiece featuring a segmental astragalled fanlight. The porch has open Ionic columns, with broken volutes, and a modern glazed infill. A tripartite window is located on the first floor (the center section is blocked and painted to resemble a window). The bays to the left and right are slightly recessed, each containing two windows at basement level and at the principal and first floors. The principal floor windows are set within recessed panels with ashlar aprons, while the first floor windows feature nine panes. Wide angle pilasters are positioned at the outer left and right.

The east elevation has two windows to the basement, and to the principal and first floors (the first floor left window is blocked and painted to simulate a window). The west elevation is similar, but the first floor right window is blocked. The north elevation has a door and four windows to the basement, with a boiler house addition projecting at the right. The principal and first floors have widely spaced windows; a blank wallplane is centrally located, rising to reveal a drum stairwell with a rooflight.

The interior features an entrance hall with a ribless quadripartite vaulting, a tripartite inner doorpiece and fanlight mirroring the outer door. A round central hall contains a geometric, cantilevered stone staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters, and a round cover ceiling with a faceted conical rooflight. The joinery in the central hall is grained. Other original features include some original chimneypieces, a bow-ended drawing room and dining room with a sideboard recess, and simply decorated cornices. The basement offices are largely unaltered, although a range has been removed, and there is a barrel-vaulted passage.

To the rear is an original rectangular-plan, piend-roofed stone outbuilding, forming a kitchen court. An addition of a brick generator house has created an L-shaped plan, and some original electrical fittings remain. A large, parallelogram-plan walled garden, constructed of round-coped rubble, is situated some distance to the east, with entrances to the north, south, and west sides. The south entrance doorway has been broken down and enlarged.
