Description

41, 43, 45, and 47 High Street in Banff is a three-storey, five-bay house dated 1787 and restored in 1975. The building features harled walls with painted ashlar margins and ashlar margined corners, and has a central arched pend that leads to a U-shaped rear.

The pend arch is keystoned with blocked imposts, and a double-leaf panelled door set back within the pend leads to a wide covered passage or hallway and an inner court. To the left of the pend arch, at No 41, there is an early 20th-century shopfront with a basket-arched centre door and large flanking windows. On the right, at Nos 45A and 47, there are paired narrow doors, each flanked by a single window.

The first floor features wide tripartite windows in the outer bays, with single windows in bays two and four, and a centre datestone. The second floor has small windows, including a round-headed keystoned window in the centre with blocked imposts. The centre wallhead gable has a margined apex stack. The shop windows at Nos 41 and 47 have plate glass glazing, while the other windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing and 8-pane sidelights in the tripartites, and 6-pane glazing in the second-floor windows. The building has broad margined and corniced end and front apex stacks, flat skews with moulded run-off skewputts, and a slate roof.

At the rear, access is gained through the pend to a wide passage or hallway that features a simple plaster ceiling cornice and a centre moulded plaster circle indicating the site of a former light. Two-storey modernised wings project from each side of the inner court. The rear garden is enclosed by rubble walls.
