Description
This building, located at 42-46 High Street in Elgin, dates back to 1688 and is a three-storey merchant's house with a dormerless attic. It features five bays and an arcaded ground floor, with harled walls and ashlar dressings. The façade includes five round-headed arches, the central one leading to a pend, supported by squat pillars with square capitals. The windows are symmetrical and have roll-moulded architraves, while the crowstepped gables are topped with moulded copes on the gable stacks.
At the rear, there is a low tunnel-vaulted pend leading to a close, flanked by two wings. One of these wings is an early 18th-century single-storey dwelling with three bays, rendered and lined to resemble ashlar. The other is a two-storey, four-bay wing from the 18th century, which has undergone significant remodelling. The main house has a slate roof on the High Street side, with some local slates used on the rear.
