Description
The Elgin Club, located at 10 Commerce Street in Elgin, is a tall Renaissance-style palazzo built in 1869 by architects A and W Reid. The building is two stories high and has four bays. The exterior features ashlar stonework, with a channelled design at the ground floor and rusticated quoins at the first floor, while the flanks are constructed of rubble.
The entrance door, situated in the right-hand bay, is framed by moulded architraves and a cornice supported by console brackets. To the left of the door, there are three windows with keystones. On the first floor, tall round-headed windows are set within aedicules and feature blind balustrades, with four-pane glazing. Additional architectural details include a cill course, a frieze, and a deep mullioned cornice. The die parapet was originally topped with five urns. The building also has two later swept dormers, coped end stacks, and a slate roof.
Inside, the Elgin Club boasts enriched plaster ceilings, and there is a domed billiard room on the first floor.
