Description
The building at 82, 84, and 86 High Street in Elgin, designed by Matthews and Petrie in 1857, is an Italianate structure featuring three storeys and an attic, with four bays. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, with a channelled design at the ground floor. A modern shop front and fascia are present, along with a narrow flat-headed entrance leading to a vaulted pend on the left side.
The first floor showcases long, paired windows, each adorned with a shallow moulded head set within an architrave, and features blind balustrades and flanking pilasters. A decorative band course connects the cills of four segmental-headed windows on the second floor, each window embellished with scroll ornaments at the base, moulded lugged architraves, and raised keystones, all fitted with four-pane glazing.
The building is topped with a bracketted cornice and a balustraded parapet that includes a panelled centre portion. There are two segmental-headed dormers and a three-storey rear wing accessible through the pend. Corniced end stacks are visible, and the roof is covered with slate. Additionally, there is a high rubble garden wall surrounding the property.
